Christopher Thornberg founded Beacon Economics LLC in 2006. Under his leadership the firm has become one of the most respected research organizations in California serving public and private sector clients across the United States. In 2015, Dr. Thornberg also became Director of the UC Riverside School of Business Center for Economic Forecasting and Development and an Adjunct Professor at the School.

An expert in economic and revenue forecasting, regional economics, economic policy, and labor and real estate markets, Dr. Thornberg has consulted for private industry, cities, counties, and public agencies in Los Angeles, San Francisco and the Bay Area, San Diego, the Inland Empire, Seattle, Orange County, Sacramento, Nevada, and other geographies across the nation. Recent and ongoing projects include an analysis of minimum wage programs for the City of Los Angeles; housing and rent control studies for the California Apartment Association; quarterly regional economic outlooks for the East Bay Economic Development Alliance; a recession recovery plan for the City and County of San Francisco; an annual economic assessment of LA’s city council districts for the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce; an analysis of the local technology industry for the Santa Cruz County Workforce Development Board; and economic impact studies for the 2024 Los Angeles Olympic Games Committee and the University of Southern California.

Dr. Thornberg became nationally known for forecasting the subprime mortgage market crash that began in 2007, and was one of the few economists on record to predict the global economic recession that followed. In 2015, he was named to California State Treasurer John Chiang’s Council of Economic Advisors, the body that advises the Treasurer on emerging strengths and vulnerabilities within the state’s economy. From 2008 to 2012, he served as economic advisor to the California State Controller’s Office, and as Chair of then State Controller John Chiang’s Council of Economic Advisors.

Well known for his ability to capture and hold audiences, Dr. Thornberg has presented to hundreds of leading business, government, and nonprofit organizations across the globe including Chevron, The New Yorker, Colliers International, the California Chamber of Commerce, City National Bank, the California State Association of Counties, State Farm Insurance, the City of Los Angeles, the California and Nevada Credit Union League, and the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, among many others. He has testified before the U.S. Congress House Committee on Financial Services on municipal debt issues, before the California State Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation regarding rule changes related to Proposition 13, and before the Los Angeles City Council about proposed changes to local minimum wage laws.

Dr. Thornberg is a panel member of the National Association of Business Economists’ quarterly “Outlook,” and a contributor to monthly economics polls published by the Wall Street Journal and Reuters. He also serves as Chair of the California Chamber of Commerce Economic Advisory Council, is on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, is an Executive Member of the Central City Association (Los Angeles), and is a member of the California Association for Local Economic Development. Prior to launching Beacon Economics Dr. Thornberg was a senior economist with UCLA’s Anderson Forecast. He previously taught in the MBA program at UCLA’s Anderson School, in the Rady School of Business at UC San Diego, and at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand. He has also held a faculty position in the economics department at Clemson University.

A well-known media commentator, Dr. Thornberg has appeared on CNN and NPR and is regularly quoted in major national dailies including the Wall Street Journal and New York Times.

Originally from upstate New York, Dr. Thornberg holds a Ph.D in Business Economics from The Anderson School at UCLA, and a B.S. in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Sherif Hanna is Managing Partner at Beacon Economics, LLC. Mr. Hanna has over 30 years of operations management experience and guides the long-term direction of the firm, establishing short-term goals, objectives, and strategies to achieve that vision. He also oversees the Economic, Fiscal, and Social Impact Analysis practice area, one of the firm’s core competencies. He has helped build Beacon Economics’ name and client base through a focus on customer service and by creating strategic partnerships with key business and community institutions and organizations. He works extensively with senior executives in state and local government and at Fortune 500 companies that span industries such as manufacturing, banking and finance, insurance, real estate, and global trade.

Mr. Hanna is responsible for continually improving and expanding product lines and business development strategies, and for overseeing critical roles at the firm that affect client service, growth, administration, and the professional development of staff.  He honed his managerial and strategic planning skills at both small and large companies and has particular expertise in workflow re-engineering, start-up management, and business development.

Prior to joining Beacon Economics, Mr. Hanna was Managing Director of the UCLA Anderson Forecast where he identified areas of underperformance and refined operations to ensure higher levels of productivity. Earlier in his career, Mr. Hanna was Senior Vice President of Consulting Sales and Strategic Alliances at The Advisory Company, and prior to that he was Vice President of Technology Sales and Business Development for AnnuityScout where he was responsible for national sales and account management of groundbreaking B2B and B2C technology. He also served in executive positions at American General Corp.

A long time Los Angeles resident, Mr. Hanna serves on the Executive Committee of the Central City Association (Los Angeles). He holds a B.A. in Political Science from California State University at Northridge.

Adam J. Fowler

Adam J. Fowler is Director of Research at Beacon Economics, LLC. Mr. Fowler leads the firm’s Sustainable Growth and Development practice area and its Housing, Land Use, and Real Estate Advisory. His projects focus on economic and workforce development strategies, environmental economics and domestic energy, housing and population trends, the creative economy and its workforce, public opinion and attitudes, public policy analysis, and regional economics. He is also Director of Research at the UC Riverside School of Business Center for Economic Forecasting and Development.

Recently, he led a high-profile analysis illustrating the economic benefits of professionalizing the early childcare and education workforce in Los Angeles County for UNITE-LA. He also co-authored a high profile analysis of the film and digital media industry in Los Angeles for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Division, highlighting technological disruption and the competitive value of diversity. Other recent high-profile projects include an analysis and critique of California’s regional housing goals for the public policy group Next 10, and the Otis Report on the Creative Economy 2021 for the Otis College of Art and Design. Mr. Fowler also oversees the firm’s research staff. His academic interests include the intersection of behavioral economics and public policy.

Formerly, he served as a Research Manager at Beacon Economics, and prior to joining the firm, was a member of the Fox Uncertainty Lab and the Consortium of Behavioral Scientists. He served as a teaching assistant in American Government, Public Opinion, and Introductory Game Theory at the University of California, Los Angeles. Mr. Fowler also worked as a producer on a documentary film that was acquired by HBO. He has provided expert commentary to a wide variety of media outlets, appearing in the New York TimesLos Angeles TimesSan Francisco Chronicle, and Sacramento Business Journal. He is a member of the American Political Science Association, the American Association for Public Opinion Research, and the International Documentary Association.

Mr. Fowler holds an M.A. degree in Political Science from the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and a Ph.D. ABD in Political Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Rick Smith is Senior Director of Business Development at Beacon Economics, LLC. He is responsible for growing the firm’s client base, and improving and expanding its business development strategies. Mr. Smith has over 20 years of sales, sales management, marketing, and financial industry experience with a concentration on the home mortgage industry, financial management, and equities trading. His work includes building a deep understanding of our clients’ research needs and developing strong connnections in key regions across the state. In 2017, he joined the Board of Directors of the Inland Empire Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Smith has maintained a long term association with professional proprietary stock trading firm, Bright Trading, LLC. Formerly, he was a senior mortgage loan officer with Bank of America and a home mortgage consultant with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, Builder Division where he received awards for outstanding sales. Throughout his career in the residential mortgage industry, he has worked in sales and sales management at First Nationwide Bank and Home Savings of America. A Certified Financial Manager (CFM), Mr. Smith was also a financial consultant at Merrill Lynch. He holds a Series 7 Securities License and a California Real Estate Sales License.

Victoria Pike Bond

Victoria Pike Bond is Director of Marketing & Communications at Beacon Economics, LLC. She is responsible for all internal and external communications at the firm including public and media relations, product marketing, and website development and management.

Ms. Bond is a specialist in the fields of strategic communications and public affairs and has worked with members of the state, national, and international media managing crisis communications and conducting targeted outreach. She served as a press spokesperson for the California State Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and is an accomplished writer of communications pieces including press releases, newsletters, op-eds, marketing materials, proposals, and website content. Before joining Beacon, Ms. Bond managed media relations at the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) where she was responsible for all aspects of the institute’s media operation. Prior to that, she was a communications associate for environmental and communication management firm Circlepoint, working on the communication components of major public projects including the San Francisco Bay Bridge retrofit, the 680/24 Interchange reconstruction in Walnut Creek, and the merger of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads.

Ms. Bond holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota.

Taner Osman, PhD

Manager, Regional and Sub-Regional Analysis

Taner Osman is Manager of Regional and Sub-Regional Analysis at Beacon Economics. Dr. Osman plays a leading role in many of the firm’s principal research projects, which currently include examining the potential effect of minimum wage law changes on California’s restaurant industry, and developing labor market analyses and industy profiles for a variety of regional economies. He is also a postdoctoral researcher at the Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies and an instructor in the Department of Urban Planning at the University of California, Los Angeles. His research focuses on how local economic development and land use policies affect the performance of industries and regional economies. He also specializes in the impact of high-technology industries on local economies.

Dr. Osman co-authored the book “The Rise and Fall of Urban Economies,” a comparative study of the Bay Area and Los Angeles economies published by Stanford University Press. He publishes scholarly work in the areas of economic development, regional economics, and land use planning.

Dr. Osman holds a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from the University of California, Los Angeles with a specialization in regional and international development.

Patrick Adler

Patrick Adler is Manager of Sustainable Growth and Development at the UC Riverside School of Business Center for Economic Forecasting and Development. He provides guidance on the Center’s core projects surrounding workforce development and economic development strategy. In addition to his role at the Center, he is also the Sustainable Growth and Development Manager at Beacon Economics. His current work portfolio includes developing a growth action plan for the City of Industry’s manufacturing sector, creating an economic development and revitalization study for the City of San Bernardino, and building an economic development plan that will deliver a roadmap for economic growth in the Walker River Corridor for the County of Lyon, Nevada.

Prior to joining the Center, Patrick conducted economic development engagements with municipalities and regional planning agencies in the United States and Canada. His consulting work focuses on identifying promising industrial development pathways and building local capacity for transformative change through stakeholder engagement and consensus building. Earlier projects include conducting an economic study to support the expansion of a municipal airport, creating a workforce assessment for a community college system, and devising a technology transfer strategy for a research university.

Additionally, Patrick has researched broadly on regional innovation and entrepreneurship, and recently on firm headquarters location and the geography of urban technology. He has published academic articles in journals such as Regional Studies, Plos 1, and the Journal of Urban Affairs and has been quoted in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Monthly, and NFL Network, among others. Patrick is also a research affiliate with the School of Cities at The University of Toronto, where he worked full time before joining the Center for Forecasting.

Patrick’s dissertation research focuses on the role of cultural intermediators—curators—in forging creative ecosystems. As part of that project, he conducted a four-year study of regional exports to 237 American music festivals.

Patrick will receive a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from the University of California, Los Angeles with a specialization in regional development, in June of 2021. He holds an M.A. in Economic Geography and a B.A. (with distinction) in in Urban Planning and Economic Geography both from The University of Toronto.

Mazen Bou Zeineddine

Mazen Bou Zeineddine is Manager of Economic, Fiscal, and Social Impact Analysis at Beacon Economics, LLC. Mr. Bou Zeineddine oversees research and client and team development within that practice area in addition to supporting a diverse range of the firm’s principal projects, with a special focus on regional economic analysis.

His recent key projects include examining the economic, fiscal, and social impacts generated by the University of California, the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, the Santa Monica Pier, Loyola Marymount University, the Toyota Music Factory, and the RMS Queen Mary. Very recently, he led an economic and fiscal impact analysis of the Gateway Paso Robles, a major mixed-use development that includes hotel, retail, office, and residential space. Mr. Bou Zeineddine presented the study’s findings to the Paso Robles City Council, reflecting the growing focus on tourism as a critical component of the area’s regional economy.

In addition to his economic impact work, Mr. Bou Zeineddine focuses on regional demographic analysis and has completed population forecasts for the San Diego Regional Planning Agency and the Riverside County Transportation Commission. His portfolio of work also includes a high-profile analysis of the creative economy in Los Angeles County and California, a regional demographic forecast for the San Diego Association of Governments, and a forward looking analysis of the healthcare workforce in Los Angeles County. He has produced a regional intelligence report examining local economic trends for the City of San Jose, provided key research support for an in-depth analysis of the tech sector in Santa Cruz County, and assisted with an assessment of future housing needs in the City of Long Beach.

Mr. Bou Zeineddine’s academic interests include econometric analysis and his graduate studies focused heavily on the study of statistics and mathematics, including linear algebra. Prior to joining Beacon Economics, he worked in the Trade and Finance Department of the Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait where he managed client accounts and ensured legal documentation requirements were met. He was also a business analyst for Autokal Inc. where he conducted market research, developed marketing strategies, and tracked website data.

Mr. Bou Zeineddine holds an M.A. in Economics from the University of Southern California and a B.A. in Economics from the State University of New York at Oswego.

Lachlan Roach

Lachlan Roach is Business Development Manager at Beacon Economics, LLC. Mr. Roach is responsible for managing the firm’s proposal processes, which includes playing a key role in creating and facilitating business development strategies for a variety of client segments and product offerings. He has professional expertise in managing marketing and business development programs, as well as extensive experience building strategic partnerships and establishing strong collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Prior to joining Beacon Economics, Mr. Roach was a Public Diplomacy Manager at the Australian Consulate-General in Los Angeles where he developed, implemented, and performance managed the Consulate-General’s public diplomacy and marketing programs. Prior to that, he served as an Economic Diplomacy Officer for the Consulate-General and his duties included conducting economic policy research related to priority business and trade sectors. Earlier in his career, he was as an International Policy Officer for the Australian Department of Defence.

Mr. Roach holds a Bachelor of International Studies from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. As part of his academic training, he also completed an International Study Exchange at the ESSEC Business School in Paris, France.

Mike Dozier

Mike Dozier is Beacon Economics’ Director of Business Development for the Northern California region. Mr. Dozier is responsible for expanding the firm’s client base in the northern part of the state and for contributing to and improving its business development strategies. A leader with over 30 years of executive level administrative experience, Mr. Dozier has a comprehensive understanding of public funding, university collaboration, economic and workforce development, fiscal and economic impact analysis, and strategic planning.

Mr. Dozier owns and operates his own consulting firm and previously served as the Executive Director of the Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED) at Fresno State. Under Mr. Dozier’s leadership, OCED established and administered the San Joaquin Rural Development Center, San Joaquin Valley Broadband Consortium, the Community and Regional Planning Center, Fresno State Small Business Development Center (SBDC), and the San Joaquin Valley Regional Industry Cluster Initiative. OCED also authored and was the Principal Investigator (PI) for the federally designated ‘Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership’ (IMCP) called AgPLUS. OCED partners with the California Association for Local Economic Development and the International Economic Development Council to conduct the annual Introduction to the Economic Development Certificate course.

Mr. Dozier also served as the Lead Executive of the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley from 2009 to 2017. The Partnership is an 8-county regional collaborative established by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2005 to address issues affecting the Valley in 10 areas of focus: Economic Development, Workforce Development/Higher Education, Housing, PreK-12 Education, Broadband, Health and Wellness, Air Quality, Energy, Water Quality/Supply, and Sustainable Communities. The 45-member Board is made up of 8 private sector leaders and 8 elected officials representing the 8 counties of the San Joaquin Valley. The Partnership provides a unique and on-going relationship between local and regional leaders and the State of California.

Formerly, Mr. Dozier was Director of Community and Economic Development for the City of Clovis. He is also a past Vice President of the California Association of Local Economic Development, and past-president of the University Economic Development Association (UEDA). He currently serves on the UC Merced Small Business Development Center Advisory Committee.

Mr. Dozier holds a B.A. in Political Science and Public Administration from California State University Stanislaus.

Brian Vanderplas

Brian Vanderplas is a Senior Research Associate at Beacon Economics, LLC. Mr. Vanderplas plays a leading role in many of the firm’s principal research projects with deep specialization in Economic, Fiscal, and Social Impact Analysis, Regional and Sub-Regional Analysis, EB-5 Economic Analysis, and Litigation Support and Expert Testimony. Within these practice areas, he focuses heavily on labor and employment, demographic, and real estate market analysis.

Mr. Vanderplas’s current and recent projects include assessing the economic impacts and contributions made by universities including the University of Southern California, UCLA, and California State University Long Beach. He has also played leading roles in high profile economic impact analyses for the Los Angeles 2024 Olympic Committee, Delta Air Lines, the Electric Daisy Carnival, and Otis College of Art and Design. Applying his expertise in regional economics, he has produced economic and demographic assessments of each city council district in Los Angeles for the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, and in Anaheim for the City of Anaheim. He leads Beacon’s monthly analysis of California’s employment numbers, a report widely used by statewide media, local governments, and private businesses.

Mr. Vanderplas is also responsible for building and maintaining a wide variety of complex databases that support the firm’s statewide and national economic forecasts, public policy studies, and other projects. In addition to preparing, cleaning, and seasonally adjusting data, he is deeply experienced in a wide array of economic and econometric software programs including STATA, EViews, and SPSS. Mr. Vanderplas’s academic focus includes transportation economics and international trade and development.

Prior to joining Beacon Economics, Mr. Vanderplas conducted graduate level research on the educational attainment level of migrant populations and on fuel consumption as it relates to population density. He holds M.A and B.A. degrees in Economics from California State University, Long Beach.

Hoyu Chong

Hoyu Chong is Practice Lead in Sustainable Growth and Development at Beacon Economics LLC. Ms. Chong leads research within that practice area and plays an instrumental role in the area of Housing, Land Use, and Real Estate. She works heavily with geographic information system (GIS) software and U.S. Census data in support of economic and policy analysis related to energy, the environment, housing, land use, and transportation. In 2020, she was a graduating Fellow of Leadership Southern California, an esteemed program run in partnership with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Chong’s current and recent projects include leading research on a green innovation index for California that compares the state’s key environmental indicators, such as clean technology and renewable energy, with those of the U.S. and world. She has also recently led analyses on the state of housing production in California, on trends over time in housing, migration, and employment in the state, on the adoption, costs, and use of zero-emission vehicles in California, and on how transportation infrastructure funding in the state compares to other locations. In her focus on affordability, she has analyzed the effect rent control ordinances in California have on mobile home parks.

Ms. Chong’s Southern California work portfolio includes conducting a review of the financial feasibility of a major mixed-use development project in downtown Santa Monica, analyzing and quantifying future housing needs through 2040 for the City of Long Beach, and examining the economic effects of an affordable housing ballot measure in Los Angeles.

Formerly, Ms. Chong was a Senior Research Associate with Beacon Economics and has been a Research Intern at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, DC. She holds an M.A. in Economics from the University of Southern California and a B.A. in Business Economics from UCLA with minors in Accounting and Spanish.

Alissa Dubetz

Alissa Dubetz is a Senior Research Associate at Beacon Economics, LLC. Ms. Dubetz is responsible for supporting a diverse range of projects within the firm’s Economic, Fiscal, and Social Impact Analysis practice area. Her current projects include examining the economic impacts of a major music festival for promoter and venue operator, Live Nation, and analyzing the impacts that the University of California system has on the state and local communities.

Ms. Dubetz has deep academic and professional experience in both quantitative and qualitative research methods including using statistical programming platforms such as STATA and SAS. She has published articles related to the fuel oil markets in Jordan and Turkey, and has conducted and presented research related to the resettlement of Syrian refugees. Her academic interests include international and domestic economic development, statistical methods, and macroeconomic theory.

Prior to joining Beacon Economics, Ms. Dubetz held key roles in litigation consulting and market research with an emphasis on data collection and analysis. She was a research assistant at Resolution Economics where she played an integral role in providing support for a number of employment dispute cases, and before that, was a market analyst at Axelrod Energy Projects where she tracked and researched developments in the global fuel oil market. She has also served as an international economic development assistant and has volunteered with Human Rights Watch.

Ms. Dubetz holds an M.A. in Economics from the University of Southern California and a B.A. in Economics and Middle East Studies (double major) from Fordham University, College at Rose Hill.

James McKeever

James McKeever is a Research Associate in Regional and Sub-Regional Analysis at Beacon Economics, LLC. Mr. McKeever is responsible for supporting a wide range of the firm’s projects and initiatives, focusing on regional and sub-regional economic analysis. He has extensive experience as a mixed-methods researcher and has used econometric modeling, geographic information systems, and social network analysis in his previous work.

He has been published in academic journals and has presented his research at global economic geography and innovation conferences. His main academic interests include regional and industrial transformation, statistical methods, digital sociology, and sustainability studies.

Prior to joining Beacon Economics, Mr. McKeever worked on multiple global research projects. He was a researcher at Lund University School of Economics and Management where he explored both the industrial and regional transformation of creative industries in Sweden, Norway, India, and China. This research mapped technology firms’ development and growth based on cultural, regional, legal, and institutional contexts from a global perspective. The project also explored the knowledge networks and globalization processes of small and medium-sized enterprises.

Prior to that, Mr. McKeever worked as a visiting researcher on a European Union funded project (MAKERS) at the Regional Union of Chambers of Commerce of Venice. This project primarily addressed the role of sustaining the competitiveness of EU manufacturing sectors and the emergence of industry 4.0 in Europe. Mr. McKeever’s role in the project explored the digitalization of globalization processes, the evolution of technology business clusters, and role of global and regional knowledge networks, and how they facilitate manufacturing upgrading in the new media industry of Southern Sweden.

Mr. McKeever holds an MSc. in Innovation and Spatial Dynamics from Lund University School of Economics and Management, and a B.A. with Honors in Finance from the National College of Ireland.

Steven Espinoza

Steven Espinoza is a Research Associate in the Housing, Land Use, and Real Estate practice area at Beacon Economics, LLC. Mr. Espinoza’s primary focus involves market research and data analysis in the urban economics space.

Mr. Espinoza has extensive expertise in working with city governments and analyzing a wide variety of data sets. His past professional experience includes working with the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts’ Open Data Manager to engage local populations with the City’s vast collection of open data. His work included building interactive, publicly available dashboards for different city departments. Mr. Espinoza also spent a summer in Buenos Aires, Argentina, working at that city’s Ministry of Environment and Public Spaces to create interactive data visualizations. Prior to that, he worked with Echelon Insights, a Washington DC based firm, analyzing market trends and consumer sentiment.

Mr. Espinoza’s primary academic interests lie in the areas of urban economics and data science. During his studies, his projects included assessing the impact of eviction rates on intergenerational mobility using fixed-effects modeling, building predictive models to estimate the occurrences of crime in the greater Boston area, and using natural language processing (NLP) to automatically generate summaries from larger bodies of texts. He is highly proficient in both R and Python and applies these tools, as well as his knowledge of machine learning and data visualization concepts, to practical uses and strategies for businesses, nonprofits, and governments.

Mr. Espinoza holds a B.A. in Economics from Harvard University, where he graduated with departmental honors. He also holds a minor in the History of Art and Architecture and a certificate in Latin American Studies.

Danielle Tremeear is Administrative Support Manager at Beacon Economics, LLC. Ms. Tremeear has extensive expertise creating efficient and functional work environments through the management of office operations and the administration of client service processes. In her role at Beacon Economics, she is responsible for overseeing administrative operations, human resources, and special projects. She also supports multiple executives, manages and streamlines accounting procedures, plans and executes events and conferences, and acts as a liaison between staff, vendors, and clients.

Ms. Tremeear was formerly Executive Assistant at Beacon Economics and prior to joining the firm was an executive assistant at a large law firm in Southern California. She has worked in a variety of office management capacities and in retail sales. Ms. Tremeear attended The Art Institute with a focus on Fashion Marketing and Management.

Jessica Hernandez is Marketing Coordinator at Beacon Economics, LLC. Ms. Hernandez has a professional background in both front and back office management including administering customer service procedures, accounting and human resources processes, data entry, and overall office operations. In her role at Beacon Economics, she is responsible for supporting a wide variety of marketing initiatives and administrative funcions including overseeing the firm’s CRM database, designing products and promotional materials using software such as Illustrator and Photoshop, monitoring media coverage, and assisting with e-marketing and social media campaigns. She also helps oversee administrative staff in managing schedules and phones, interfacing with clients and vendors, streamlining technology, and assisting with events and conferences. Prior to joining Beacon Economics, she was a leasing agent and customer service representative for a large storage facility and before that oversaw administrative functions for a painting contractor and a construction company. Ms. Hernandez is fluent in Spanish and is currently pursuing a B.A. at California State University, Northridge.

Mark Schneider is a Data Visualization and Marketing Assistant at Beacon Economics. Mr. Schneider applies design to the firm’s analytic products to create rich, illuminating visualizations that illustrate economic data and explain economic trends. He blends a deep skill set in graphic design, art, data visualization, and computing science to enhance client reports and publications, design internal products, and support Beacon’s marketing communication and business development functions. He has professional expertise in a wide array of design software, programming languages, and in design thinking.

Prior to joining Beacon Economics, Mr. Schneider was an Ideation Lab Assistant at Chapman University where he created a variety of client branded collateral including corporate identity and advertising. He was also a Freelance Designer for the nonprofit Dance 4 Joy, which included a complete rebranding and social media management. Prior to that he worked in a marketing position for Beyond Limits, an artificial intelligence vendor.

Mr. Schneider holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A) from Chapman University with a study focus in Computational Science.

Rachel Amick is Administrative Associate/Project Coordinator at Beacon Economics, LLC. Ms. Amick supports all aspects of the firm’s administrative and human resources functions and manages of a wide variety of project related duties. In her role at Beacon Economics, she is responsible for assisting with filing systems, billing and contracts, scheduling and calendar maintenance, events, recruiting and staff benefits, and project management. Recently, she has led the administrative management surrounding large and complex projects related to the creative economy in the Los Angeles region. These projects include an analysis of the film and digital media industry in Los Angeles, the Otis Report on the Creative Economy 2019, and a creative economy report for the City of El Segundo. Ms. Amick has extensive experience working in administrative, customer service, and executive assistant capacities. Prior to joining Beacon Economics, she was an executive assistant and office manager at a large medical office and before that worked as a customer service representative at JNR, a company focused on improving human performance in the workplace. Ms. Amick holds an A.A. in General Studies from Fullerton College with a focus on historical costume design.

Jock O’Connell is Beacon Economics’ International Trade Advisor and one of the nation’s foremost authorities on world trade, global economic trends, and the internationalization of the California economy.

Mr. O’Connell is a former staff advisor to the California Commission for Economic Development and member of the California Economic Strategy Panel’s Technical Advisory Group.

He is the author of numerous articles on economic, political, and trade issues that have appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street JournalLos Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury-News, Sacramento Bee, California Journal, Salon.Com, and Pacific Standard Magazine. In conjunction with Beacon Economics, he edits the monthly California Trade Report, an analysis of the latest data on the Golden State’s export trade.

Mr. O’Connell has spoken before a diverse array of business organizations and other groups during his career. Among the more prominent audiences he has addressed have been: Russia’s Institute for USA and Canada Studies in Moscow; Japan’s Keidanren in Tokyo; the Confederation of British Industry in London; the Foreign Trade Association of Southern California in Los Angeles; and the Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco.

Mr. O’Connell has been a lecturer at the University of California at Davis and at California State University, Sacramento. From 2005 to 2010, he held the position of International Trade and Economics Advisor at the University of California Center in Sacramento, where he lectured and organized workshops and seminars designed to keep California’s policymakers informed of the latest developments in world trade and their effect on California’s economy.

The primary emphasis of Mr. O’Connell’s consulting work involves the logistics of foreign trade and, more specifically, the condition of California’s international trade infrastructure. He has worked with several nationally recognized transportation planning consulting firms, including Cambridge Systematics, TranSystems, and the Tioga Group.

Mr. O’Connell is a member of the Transportation Research Board’s Committee on Intergovernmental Relations in Aviation. As a division of the National Research Council, the Transportation Research Board advises Congress, executive-branch federal agencies, the states, and other organizations on key transportation issues.

Mr. O’Connell grew up on the coast of Maine and received his B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross before pursuing graduate studies at the University of California at Davis. He has also studied at the Institute of European Studies (University of Vienna) and the London School of Economics, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
